Katka Peak, Cliffy Peak Trail #182 Spring-Summer-Fall Moderate

I always wondered about hiking SE of Bonner's Ferry on the ridge that follows the Kootenai Valley to Troy, Mt. After doing this hike I would highly suggest it. The trail starts near Black Mountain, which is the prominent mountain SE of town. The trail only gains 1000 vertical feet in 4 miles, so the pace and effort are low. After hiking about one mile, take the short walk to the top of Cliffy Peak for views of the Kootenai River Valley and Bonner's Ferry. Return to the trail and continue east for 3 miles to Katka Peak. As the trail passes a low point, continue around the south side of the mountain and look for a spur trail heading to the summit of Katka Peak. The views of Kootenai River Valley as it rounds the bend and heads towards Troy are some of the best in the area. Also notice the spectacular peaks to the northeast. They are the peaks of the North West Peaks Scenic Area in the northwest corner of Montana. To get to the trailhead, drive north on 95 to one mile past Naples and turn right (east) onto Twenty Mile Creek Road. Drive about 10 miles to the junction with Road #274, that climbs to Black Mountain, as the road cuts back to Black Mountain, turn right (east) and continue about 4 miles to the trailhead.

Cool things to see: Kootenai River Valley, Bonner's Ferry, NW Peaks Scenic Area, Cabinet Mountain Wilderness, cliffs and summit views
